GOTIGHT SEASON 1 NOSTALGIA: WEEK 9 WEEK 9: Hunting for Whisperers in the Fog The second week of July usually conjures scenes of kids swimming in a pool, the scent of grilled meat wafting through the humid summer air, an ornery dad mowing the lawn in a sweat-soaked t-shirt, fist fights breaking out at Home Cheapo over the last air conditioner… ahh summer in the good old U.S. of A. We were spared these “luxuries” in week 9 and instead the northeast coast was entrapped in a shroud of wispy fog, temps in the 60s and 70s and hard NE winds followed by calm winds and pea soup fog. Sounds like October, or… Scotland but nope it’s July in New England! Coming off of one of the most active and memorable weeks in The Surfcaster’s Classic’s short history anticipation was running extra high, especially when it came out that last week’s runaway winners, Team BadFish, would not be competing this week. This was also the second week in a row where teams were permitted to start fishing at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday instead of first light on Thursday. Those nine-and-a-half extra hours made a huge difference in WEEK 8 but they didn’t quite shake out that way for WEEK 9. Thursday morning’s first update was pretty thin, with Team GoTight posting a five fish haul of 159 and The Barclay BOY Mark Blackwell (sans Slim) posting a single fish at 29 inches. Later in the day a few more scores trickled in, Team Minus Tide slid into the top spot with 162, The Holy Hookers made their first appearance in several weeks with a unified effort for 152. Size Matters entered two fish worth 55 points and Pete Wells of Blood for Blood made his triumphant return logging a 47-inch, 42-pound cow after a long hiatus from competition! Much of the best action was centered around that manmade waterway that separates the Cape from the mainland and many of the regulars of said waterway were licking their chops thinking that with three more days to mine, it was going to be a runaway shot for anyone with a ditch stick, a pencil popper and a 4-ounce jig. However, the days and nights that followed found a new class of smaller and super-finicky fish pushing tiny baitfish. Our teams on the ground struggled to put upgrades on the rocks and it was left mostly to the surfcasters to try and scratch out a winning score. The one exception to that was Team Misfits’ Bruce May. Bruce seemed to have the winning combination and by the end of that Friday morning, Bruce had logged a five fish limit worth 167 points, putting them at the top of the charts. Team GoTight found a few scant upgrades and raised their score four points to 163, one inch ahead of the now tied--Minus Tide and Fishwhispering RI—each with 162. Size Matters threw down three more fish worth 100 points, giving them 155 and the Holy Hookers found a three-inch upgrade tying them with the men of size. The secret weapon for Size Matters was Paul Sibiga who logged a fat 39-inch fish and another smaller fish—pushing them into the running. On Saturday morning Sibiga struck again with a twin of his 39-incher from the night before, this coupled with his Size Matters teammate, Ethan Jaskulski’s upgrade gave them their best score of the tournament so far with a respectable 165. A score of 120 for the SS Bass Chasers and a single 28-incher for Fishy Business’s Keith Donnelly were the only other changes on Saturday morning. Justin Trask of Blood for Blood joined his teammate with a nice fish of his own in the afternoon, his 44-incher bringing their score up to 91. Later in the day Christian Amaral from the 5th Cousins and Rich Higgins from The Castaways logged single fish entries worth 36 and 29 points respectively. That 167 for Team Misfits was holding strong, but it just didn’t seem safe! On Sunday morning we would that learn The Misfit’s 167 was indeed unsafe as Team Minus Tide caught up with 167 of their own and The Night’s Huntsmen’s Tom Kosinski logged a five fish score of 175. Other teams joined the fray as The Fish Pigs came back to the game with a five fish score of 154, Team GoTight added an inch for a final score of 164. Pete Wells added a 33-incher to Blood for Blood’s tally finishing the week with 124 and d’Anglers made their first appearance on the scoreboard with a single 27-incher, hopefully we’ll see more from them in the coming weeks. But late in the day came a few upgrades for Fishwhispering RI pushing them ahead of The Night’s Huntsmen by one inch. Congrats to Scott and Chris and a huge thank you to Red Top Sporting Goods for sponsoring WEEK 9! Sign Ups Open NOW at gotight.net/sign-up
