GRADE 1 WINNER TANNERY 5-2 FOR MISS LIBERTY STAKES With an impeccable pedigree and equally impressive racing record, Tannery is set to make her 2014 debut in this Monday’s Miss Liberty Stakes at a mile and a sixteenth on turf. “It’s a little short for her,” said trainer Alan Goldberg, “but I figured I’d try her at a mile and a sixteenth, and if she can perform alright there, maybe we can even cut her back a bit.” Tannery is a 5-year-old mare by Arc de Triomphe winner and 2007 European Horse of the Year Dylan Thomas. Her mother, Danse Grecque, is by sire of sires Sadler’s Wells. From 20 lifetime outings, Tannery sports a record of 6-4-2 with four of those victories coming in Ireland before heading stateside in 2012. One year later she won the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay at Belmont and the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine. She closed out her 2013 campaign with a hard-charging third in the Red Smith Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct, beaten just a half-length for it all against the boys. Goldberg indicated that a solid performance Monday could land her another date against male rivals. “If she does well, who knows, maybe she’ll end up in the United Nations (Grade 1 at Monmouth on July 6),” the trainer said. Tannery, who’s been named the 5-2 morning line favorite, will break from post three with jockey Julian Pimentel aboard for the first time. The main competition for the Richard Santulli color-bearer will likely come from Overheard, who ships in from Canada for trainer Malcolm Pierce and Nashly’s Vow, a winner at Pimlico last out. The Miss Liberty goes as race 10 on a special 11-race Memorial Day card. Gates open 11:30 a.m., with first post set for 12:50 p.m.
