GRAND RAPIDS – NorthPointe Christian gave Godwin Heights its first regular-season loss in nearly two years Saturday night, beating the Wolverines 58-55. The Wolverines (8-1), ranked No. 2 in the Michigan Associated Press Class B state rankings, led by eight points at halftime. But the Mustangs (8-1) opened the second half with a 16-2 run in a MLive Grand Rapids Press Game of the Week make-up contest from Jan. 9. The OK Silver Conference game remained close through the fourth quarter, but a late layup for the Mustangs and three missed free throws for Godwin proved to be the difference. It was Godwins first loss since Jan. 25, 2013 in the regular season. Key to the game -NorthPointe Christian’s defense was able to contain a Godwin offense that had been averaging over 70 points a game. The Mustangs held the Wolverines to 26 second-half points, including six in the third quarter. Godwin highlights -Wolverines senior Delaney Blaylock scored 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Blaylocks play helped the Wolverines overcome an early six-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a 55-54 lead with 22 seconds left in the game. Michael Williams added 13 points. Godwin’s defense set the tone early, forcing nine first-quarter turnovers, staking the Wolverines to a 12-8 lead. NorthPointe Christian highlights -Andrew Holesinger’s driving layup with 13 seconds to go in regulation gave the Mustangs a 55-54 lead. It proved to be a lead that the Mustangs would not relinquish. -The Mustangs, trailing 29-21 at halftime, opened the second half with a 16-2 run to take their first lead. Huckaby buried a pair of 3-pointers and Andrew Holesinger drained a 3 as well to spark the run. Huckaby finished with 15 points. -Kual Nhial, a 6-foot-6 senior, was a big reason why the Mustangs were able stay within eight points of the Wolverines at halftime. Nhial scored 10 of his 20 points and grabbed five of his 11 rebounds in the first half. Game notes -Blaylock recently announced that he will be attending Lewis University, a Division 2 school in Romeoville, Ill. -NorthPointe will return to action Tuesday at Hopkins, while Godwin will visit Calvin Christian
