GRID On this day, 1981, the Center for Disease control and Prevention noted five men in LA having a rare form of pneumonia. It was given the name “Gay Related Immunodeficiency” or GRID. Shortly thereafter it got changed to the more common AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). It’s still with us with about 34 million being HIV positive. Progress is being made; people with it are living longer, but there roughly 7,000 new cases each day. It has killed about 30 million since 1981.
