GUARANÍ 16 – When I was still hunting, I used to stay in wilderness for a few days together. I never took food with me: in the bush I had another wife and I knew she’d provide for me. I’d just into the forest, find a suitable place and wait. She always sent me something, maybe a wild pig, a wild hen, sometimes a deer. Men who didn’t have a wife in the forest had to walk for a long time before they could shoot an animal. – How can you find a wife in the forest? – For the first time you have to go with somebody who already has a wife. As a young man I went with an older friend. We walked though the forest without any particular direction and listened and waited. My friend talked to his wife, he introduced me and said I looked for a partner. We had to go several times before something happened. Suddenly a strange wind moved the trees, I felt as if an invisible force hugged me. This is your wife, said my friend. After that I regularly went to the wilderness and stayed there. You have to take care for your wife, spend time with her and she’ll always take care of you. You’ll always get enough meat to feed yourself and your family in the village. But you can’t sell what she gave you, you can shoot only as much as you need, or she’d punish you. I knew a few men you broke this rule. Sometimes they suddenly died without any particular cause. Others went to the forest and never came back. – Can a man loose a wife? Can he betray her? – He can. If you don’t go to the wilderness for a longer time, if you neglect her, she’d feel you don’t respect her and would get mad. This way she can become dangerous. I left mine when my human wife (the white-haired lady on a picture bellow) told me to stop going on a hunt. She said, you’re never home and you’re too old for these things. I never went (deep) in the forest again. – You didn’t say goodbye? – No!!! It’s better you don’t say anything. She’d come after you. It’s better she doesn’t know. But if now I decided to go hunting for a few days she’d remember I’ve left her and would revenge. You have to keep the contact or nothing.
