GUIDED BY LOVE Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.—1 Corinthians 14:1-3 These verses direct our attention to the point and purpose for which God qualifies and gifts us—to bless others and to be a part of their building up, their comfort and training. Prophecy is, of course, a present word from the Lord to present people for the purpose of helping them grow and mature. What an incredible thought; you and I can be instruments of life and blessing to those around us. We can be the bearers of good news, announcing words of hope to people, no matter what their situation or condition. Picture a giant river with boats of all sizes and shapes following the bends and turns of the rivers path. They dock at various points and unload their cargo. Only by pursuing the course of the river can they hope to deliver what they carry to the right location. Boats dont do well beyond the riverbank... Likewise, we are told to pursue love—the course of the river—and be careful never to try delivering gifts outside the bounds of love. As we travel this river of deep affection and caring one for another, we will be told to put ashore at various points and deliver our goods. The word to put ashore will come from the Master Navigator Himself, so we must be diligent to listen for His direction while we pursue the river of love.
