GUIDED TRANSPORT NEWSLETTER Nr 134 TO BE DATED SEPTEMBER 2ND 2013 UK and emailed. Stories in reverse order 3 of 11 date written Tuesday 28th August 2013 ST ALBANS CITY RAILWAY STATION OPENS ITS STATE OF THE ART CYCLE STORAGE SYSTEM. I remember in the early 1960s I used to store my bicycle at the station for 15/6d (new money £0.76p) a week. The storage rack consisted of 10 grooves on a frame on the northbound fast platform. Trains from London St Pancras to Glasgow, Manchester, Derby and Nottingham would pass at lightning speed. However I also remember that the station was in urgent need for renovation as several features emanated from the pre-war days and even from the old Midland Railway days. All that has now changed. Thameslink has now arrived and there are a lot more trains. There are commuters by the million and many more now arrive at the station by bicycle. Where the old booking office was a new large car park has been created and within that car park is a new very large cycle storage rack system which Monday to Friday is fully utilised. St Albans City Station is one of two stations in the city but are unconnected to each other. The City Station is on the Hatfield Road and that means potentially a very large number of short cycling journeys whereas people would at one time catch buses. I wish it well. Cycling and Trains should be permanently bonded to one another.
