GYCD FAN POST: Hello Council Delegates, There is a supposed petition going around for Chris Deschene to override the veto. Do not over ride Ben Shelly or the Navajo Nation Supreme Court. This will weaken our government, because right now we have three branches to balance the powers. If it takes only one to over ride the other two, we will have a government that is not credible in the eyes of the public. If people are saying that english only speakers are being discriminated against, our Dine only speakers are discriminated in the State of Arizona by the english only law that was passed a few years ago, which Deschene never combated but rolled over too. He is challenging our law that we have had since time immemorial. We are sovereign and have aright to make our own laws. Like the US president has to be born in the US to run for president, here our Navajo president has to be fluent in Dine. The US Supreme court cant touch our law, unless we waive it. We are only controlling our laws internally and one example would be the Martinez case in Indian law, where women who intermarried childrens lost their CIB, but the men who intermarried children’s retained their CIBs. It seems wrong but it was allowed to stand in the US Supreme Court because the Indians there are sovereign. Deschene can still change things appropriately, through the correct process, just not during an ongoing election. If a bilghana politician changed election requirement laws while an election is ongoing it would be perceived as totally wrong by everyone. This is what Deschene is doing right now. If he wants to change it, it is better for him to do it when there is no election going on, by an referendum. If one person can change a law to benefit himself during an election, think of the changes he can do if he becomes president. He might make absurd changes and he does not know our language and even at most he does not know much about our ceremonies. Which our language is tied back in with our ceremonies. On top of all that Deschene grew up on the reservation, and he did not learn our language even when he lived on the reservation. He is a marine and an attorney. It should be second nature for him to have attention to detail and being truthful. How can he misread the application requirements, unless he intentionally wrote the wrong information. There is more at stake then just Deschenes pride, our whole Dine identity is at stake. Yes there are many young ones that do not know their language, yes we have politicians that are running that should not be, but where we they during primary elections. It is their own fault for not having interest in our politics and there are reasons why we have dates and deadlines for certain events. Unfortunately, this is one of them. They can change things next election if they prepare appropriately, they missed their chance this election. Deschene can get his chance again, through the correct process. Not like this. Please do not over ride President Ben Shelly and the Navajo Nation Supreme Court. Let the ruling stand. Please!
