Gap widens between Pirates and Cardinals The gap between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates got a little bigger. The Cardinals agreed with free-agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a reported four-year contract for $52 million. The move gives the Cardinals, the reigning National League champs, a shortstop with with pop. The Cardinals beat the Pirates in five games in the NL Division Series. Peralta hit 11 home runs in 409 at-bats with the Tigers last season. He was suspended for 50 games for being involved in the Biogenesis drug scandal. Peralta hit more than 20 home runs four times in his career, three times it happened as a member of the Cleveland Indians. I guess it proves that it pays to break the rules. The move by the Cardinals comes on the heels of the team trading former World Series hero David Freese to the Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos. That move strengthens the Cardinals’ outfield defense. It’s time for the Pirates to step up and make a splash in free agency.
