Garden Tip: Driving home from town this evening I noticed that one of our neighbors a couple of miles down the county road has recently planted four or five new shade trees, apparently out of 5- or 7-gallon pots. A couple of them are not plumb with the world. Hopefully they will notice and reset them. Trees that start out their lives at an angle will never have vertical trunks unless they are physically lifted out and reset. You cannot pull them, push them or stake them to force them into the vertical position. They have to be dug, reset and then staked for a year or two, until they are firmly rooted. (I’d stop and say something, but that’s a bit uncomfortable – especially with the padlocked gate and the “Do Not Trespass” signs.)
