Gautam Deb distributes rations in Mirik region DEEP PRADHAN, MIRIK, 23 Aug 2013: Notwithstanding the statehood agitation across the Darjeeling Hills spearheaded by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee, the Trinamool Congress today distributed rations to residents of Singbulli tea garden in Mirik. North Bengal Development minister Gautam Deb was present to distribute 10 kg rice, 2 kg atta and 2 kg potatoes to each garden resident since morning. The ration distribution programme was held at the Singbuli Primary School and the minister was accompanied by TMC Hill unit convener Rajen Mukhia and other local leaders. Rations were also distributed to residents of Pusimbeng tea garden later in the day. The initiative was taken after reports that the poorer sections of residents in the Hills have run out of rations due to the ongoing bandh. While speaking to the gathering, Deb stressed he did not come to the Hills to provoke the people, but the government had taken the initiative to distribute rations realising the present state-of-affairs among the poorer people here. Notably, this was the first instance in the Hills when the people came out uninhibited to receive the food items. They were seen standing in long queues since morning to receive the rations. The minister added the state government has already prepared a programme to distribute rations in 22 other areas across the Hills.
