(Gee Al, did you have to spoil it? With more Island Memories?) A lot of you may think that living on an island is idyllic. Well, the nature can sometimes be so. And its been declared a good place to die at a recent meeting (not kidding). When I lived on Tutuila Island, Samoa, some decades ago, I also saw people in wheel-chairs, with i.vs, being wheeled off the cruise ships that would dock at Pago Pago. I asked one such guy How come yourre coming here? He told me also that it was a good place to die, and that he wanted to see it. Well, Saturna Island, in that politically supernatural BC, is where were having elections, as throughout BC. This is when people either put up or shut up (and face the consequences, like the electorate that didnt vote in the US must do). Losers are called whiners, by the new ruling class, a class of the socially-connected, whose m.o. is to forbid all criticism, calling it negative (which is a form of impolite), and certainly not mention it in any official minutes (which is what others read). I suppose thats a new aristrocracy (not meritocracy), and I suppose its endemic throughout all kinds of enclaves on this planet in its various forms of privilege and authority. How does it get so bad? Its called shifting demographics (by planners), retiring boomers by others, and an old folks home with drawbridge by those who might be construed as whiners (by the new ruling class of retirees). We have an abundance of retired elementary and secondary school teachers, a retired and sacked principal, we have retired nurses and social workers, and we have land owners and very wealthy people who want less taxes!, and then we have the working rest. Yes, its a tribal existence which over twenty years (that Ive lived there) has become more entrenched as it controls island organizations. We have 53 committees on the island, whose active population (active in meetings, events) is around 120. We have a lot of absentees to convince. Hence, it is necessary for these tribal elders (I call it a cabal) to start taking over organizations, and to take over communications, and ultimately government. If youre a conservative, who likes top-down decisions, made by the rich, youll love this direction. The tribal-elders cabal has now taken over three major organizations. Once of its Brat (according to the poster) members is running for Island Truest (oops! I meant Trust). Idyllic? Shifting demographics? Thats the way its always been? Why rock the boat? Yo! Get out and vote! Them out of office!
