Geelani calls for shutdown on Sep 7, protests after Friday prayers [tma] Srinagar, All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a complete shutdown on September 7 against the scheduled music concert by Zubin Mehta at Shalimar, Srinagar. He has also urged people particularly University students to peacefully protest after Friday prayers. “The protest and shutdown should not be taken against any country or individual but what is intended is to make the world aware of our plight through such means,” Syed Ali Shah Geelani, while addressing press conference at his residence said on Monday. “We want to convey to world that a place where people wail and whine in separation of their dear ones, organizing such entertainment shows is totally uncivilized and uncalled,” Geelani added. Syed Ali Geelani said Kashmiris have proved to be the most hospitable and tolerant nation from centuries. He said everybody from every country including India is welcome here, as “we have no animosity with anyone.” “But Kashmir is a disputed and conflict zone. It does not suite a place which has been termed as “beautiful prison” by European Union to hold a music concert. It has been our (Kashmiris’) stand from the very first day that any international activity related to politics, diplomacy or sports affects the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. The Hurriyat Chairman, who was, a day ago, re-elected as Chairman of the party further said: “We had appealed the German ambassador in New Delhi to revisit the proposed music show but no reply came from their side.” “The music concert, apart from creating a negative impact on Kashmir’s disputed status will push the mass human rights violations to backburner,” the Hurriyat Chairman added. Geelani further said: “They (India) have hidden political agendas behind this show. By organizing such event, they want to convey to world that all is well is Kashmir. And unfortunately, Government of Germany is collaborating with India in strengthening its occupation here.” The veteran pro-freedom leader said we believe this show is not meant for Kashmiris, but “only a selected audience of Army generals and pro-occupational groups are intended to get entertained there.”
