Gem of the Day! Amazonite Amazonite was named for the Amazon river. Although it does occur in Brazil, amazonite has not been found in the vicinity of this great river. The name microcline comes from two Greek words meaning little and inclined, referring to the cleavage angles slight inclination from ninety degrees. Feldspar is derived from the German word feld which means field. The astrological sign of amazonite is virgo. Amazonite is the birthstone for the month of December. A relatively soft stone, Amazonite ranges from 5-6 on the Mohs scale. Large prismatic crystals are found in the Pike’s peak area of Colorado, the Ilmen mountains of Russia, they can also be found in Madagascar, and Brazil. The specimens from Colorado are sometimes found with smoky quartz, orthoclase, and albite. When this is the case the value of the specimens is much higher.
