Gems of Saint Lucia was delighted to experience the Tulip Festival in Ottawa this weekend - a festival which is heavily promoted by Ottawa Tourism. We would like to encourage everyone in Ottawa, especially Saint Lucians and friends of Saint Lucians to take some time off to enjoy the beauty of millions of tulips in the city. This marks the 62nd edition of the Tulip Festival – a Festival also known as the “festival without fences”. There is a 15 km (nine mile) scenic drive called the Tulip Route, which follows the historic Rideau Canal to the Parliament buildings and majors Hill Park and then across the Ottawa River to the Outaouais. About three million flowers blossom throughout the region. This festival dates back to 1945 when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs. And now each year Ottawa receives 20,000 tulip bulbs from the Royal Family and the Dutch Bulb Growers, a thank you for sheltering the Royal Family and for Canadas help with liberation of the Netherlands during WWII. Now the gardens of Ottawa burst into bloom each year in early May as the city celebrates the worlds largest tulip festival. Thank you Ottawa Tourism for creating such beautiful spaces for everyone to enjoy!
