General Public Sensitized on Sanitation and Waste Management Port Blair, Dec. 26: The sanitation wing of the Port Blair Municipal Council organised an awareness programme “Swatch Bharat Abiyan” on 25th Dec. 2014 in Ward No. 13 at Mohanpura Market along with the representatives of urban area for the Abhiyan nominated by the Member of Parliament, A&N Islands. The aim of the programme was to educate the citizens on the importance of Solid Waste Management System at source level for a successful and innovative management of solid waste. Waste management is essential for bringing out significant improvement in the health and sanitary conditions, aesthetics of the city and overall improvement in the quality of life of the citizens. Shri Vijay Prasad Tiwari, Sanitary Officer, PBMC, Smti Samella Bibi, Councillor, officers and staff of the Sanitary Section of the Council were present on the occasion. A demonstration on identification of waste and importance of segregation at source was also given by the Sanitary Officer who is also the Nodal Officer of Solid Waste Management. Stress was laid at management of waste at market places and also at house hold level.
