George Orwell People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. Sadly and fortunately it has been stated that less than 1% of our population has served in the military. Sadly because those who have not served or had family members who have served have no real perception of the life changing experience and do not appreciate why those military members cherish their nation. Fortunately because it means we are not constantly at war on a world wide scale as in times in our history. Sadly because more and more people buy into the baloney that some, no many, in our society preach that states that our military members are simply poor people who have no other choice for a place for employment or college money. During the WWII era at least 12% of our population served and the majority of the rest sacrificed in the manufacturing of munitions and the war effort and stepped up to take the jobs that the men left behind. While it is often referred to as our Greatest Generation because of the manner in which our service members stood tall in the face of horrible war time experiences. But I think that it is also because of how many people served and sacrificed supporting the war effort back at home. As we drift further away from that era and as we have fewer people that have actually served in the military I think many of our citizens fail to understand how much of their life is dependent upon the less than 1% of the nation that protects their ability to function in their lives oblivious to the realities of what it would be like without those willing to stand up for their nation.
