George Poirier: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Montevideo American-News (MN) - Thursday, May 15, 2014 Deceased Name: George Poirier George Poirier, 84, of Alexandria, formerly of Montevideo, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Banner Hospice at Grandview Terrace in Sun City West, Ariz. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Urnbearers were his grandchildren, Melissa Larson, Lauren Larson, Chad Anvary, Shawn Anvary, Jason Anvary, Nicole Sayre and Brianna Oeltjenbruns. Military Honors were performed by the American Legion Post 87, VFW Post 936, VVA Chapter 235 and the Minnesota National Guard. George Stuart Poirier was born in Bismarck, N.D., Aug. 24, 1929, to Ray and Faye (Taggert) Poirier. He and his family moved to Montevideo where he graduated from high school in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He returned home and purchased The Daily Reminder from his father. He married his high school sweetheart, Leona Angrimson, June 26, 1949, in Montevideo. Four children were born from this union; Pam, Michele, Michael and Kim. He sold The Daily Reminder to his brother Curt in 1959 and moved to Glenwood, to purchase the clothing store, Glenwear. He expanded his business and opened another Glenwear store in Alexandria, in 1968. Then in 1978 George moved his store to the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria where it is currently today. He worked hard and was involved in the community by being an Eagle Scout and a member of the Shriners, Masons, VFW and the American Legion. He and his family were also members of First Lutheran Church. He loved the retail clothing industry and truly made it a family business by teaching his children the ins and outs of operating a small business. He made the time he spent with each of his children special. He always enjoyed all of the holidays with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When he was able to get away from his business he enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and fishing trips in Canada. George and Leona also were able to spend their winters in Arizona for a number of years. After semi-retiring he sold his store to his daughters, Pam and Kim. Together the daughters continue to run the family business at the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Leona Poirier, of Alexandria; daughters, Pam (and Gordy) Larson, of Alexandria, Michele (and Bruce) Anvary, of Chaska, and Kim (and Gregory) Muzik, of Alexandria; grandchildren, Melissa (and Jon) Larson, of Lakeville, Lauren Larson, of Savage, Chad (and Carissa) Anvary, of Minnetonka, Shawn (and Kayla) Anvary, of Chaska, Jason Anvary, of St. Paul, Tiffany Poirier, of Austin, Justin Poirier, of Austin, Nicole (and Kasey) Sayre, of Alexandria, and Brianna (and Chad) Oeltjenbruns, of Garfield; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Curt (and Gail) Poirier, of Clearwater, Fla.; and sister-in-law Janet Poirier, of Sleepy Eye, Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Michael Poirier; and brother, Gene Poirier.
