Georgia Central U23B 3965 was another I managed to photograph - TopicsExpress

Georgia Central U23B 3965 was another I managed to photograph leading Y101 back on March 31 2014 running eastbound to Dublin GA. But I also managed to get her leading train 183, at the time a Raleigh NC to Linwood yard NC freight coming off the H line onto track 1 at the interlocking plant at Elm, right in downtown Greensboro NC. The photo date is January 3 1987, and train 183 has 5 four axle units, all still Southern, somewhat unusual by this time almost 5 years into the NS era. My vantage point is Freeman Mill Road overpass, and the view shows a true anomaly; the only seacrhlight siganls I know of on the entire Washington-Atlanta mainline. They were installed on the northbound signal bridge at Elm after the aforementioned Freeman Mill Road bridge was built, as it obscured the northbound standard GRS 2-D 3 color light signals at Elm. This nice, scenic, skyline view was readily available for a southbound train from early afternoon on either main track or the yard lead. The southbound signal bridge at Elm in the distance has recently been relocated to north of the Elm-Eugene St bridge after the connection to the H line had a power switch installed. Previously, trains had to stop and sign for orders and manually unlock and throw the switch to the H line. This became an issue when the first incarnation of the Amtrak Carolinian started running to Raleigh (and up the S line to Petersburg back then). But, I digress; SOU U23B 3965 is the star here.
