German company supports street children Merck, one of the world’s leading chemical and pharmaceutical companies, launched a project to support street children in Nairobi. At the German School Nairobi, General Manager for Consumer Health, Volker Schmidt, announced that Merck will assist the Pangani Lutheran Children Centre. The Centre accommodates more than 100 girls and provides food, shelter as well as psychological assistance. The girls also receive educational and vocational training. During the first phase, Merck will build solar panels to reduce the energy consumption of the center to save expenses. Moreover, a greenhouse will be constructed to increase self-subsistence regarding food products. After the finalization of the first phase of construction, Merck will evaluate potential follow-up projects to complement current activities. As part of the support programme, nine German technical apprentices are currently in Nairobi to start installing solar panels and the green house. At the launch at the German School Nairobi they were excited about being able to contribute to the project which will improve the lives of many children who were formerly living in the streets of Nairobi. They also took the opportunity to explain to the pupils of the German School Nairobi how the vocational training system works in Germany.
