Get in the act at Sister Act at the Civic Theatre through August 4: Don’t expect to see the traditional Nuns’ Chorus on stage at Sister Act, playing at the Civic Theatre through August 4. This group rocks the rafters after they succumb to the musical direction of a beautiful singer, Deloris (played on the night we saw the production by fabulous Alysha Deslorieux – standing in for Ta’Rea Campbell.) Deloris is running away from her (married) boyfriend Curtis (baritone Kinsley Leggs) who is backed up by a trio of “thugs” (Joey, Pablo and TJ, played by Brian Cali, Ernie Pruneda and Charles Barksdale) who are hilarious in combo, especially in their number Lady in the Long Black Dress. Then there’s the super-cop without a gun, Eddie, played perfectly by E. Clayton Cornelious who is out to save his gal, Deloris. But back to the chorus…Mother Superior (Hollis Resnik, very fine) holds out against the shenanigans among the singing Nuns for as long as she can, then realizes that the convent will be saved if they sing for funds, and ultimately for Il Papa! The stage sets and musicians are fabulous. In fact the music sounded better than it usually does at the Civic. The story is lacking in real interest, but the super performances overcome this lack. And there’s one nun who sang and danced her heart out that I will remember. Sister Mary Patrick played joyfully by Florrie Bagel. Get in the act, and see Sister Act before it closes!
