Get ready Papua New Guinea for the 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts & Culture which will be staged here in PNG from the 28th of June to the 11th of July 2014. This Festival will see the display of diverse melanesian cultures of the Oceania sub-region of Melanesia. Participating countries will be Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu as well as the Kanaks of New Caledonia with invitations extended to West Papua, Timor Leste and the Torres Strait Islands. PNG will be hosting this event for the first time since its inception in 1998 in the Solomom Islands. PNG being the leading island nation in this sub-region of Melanesia, with well over a thousand diverse cultural ethnic groupings I encourage all my fellow citizens to support the National Cultural Commission (NCC) which is the co-ordinating body of the Festival in making this Festival a success. Let us maintain our status as the leading island nation in Melanesia geographically, culturally, socially, politically and economically. Let us be proud of who we are...we are Melanesians.
