Getting Around the City: Train & Bus (Practical Living) > Trains Tokyo has one of the most advanced and modern train systems in the world. Several companies own and operate various train lines. These companies include Japan Rail (JR), Tokyu, Odakyu, Keio, and Metro Subway lines. Some websites to use to view train maps are: • JR East Japan Railway: buff.ly/1eyIE5W • Tokyo Metro (Subway): buff.ly/1eyIEme With this extensive network and numerous big and small train stations around the city, it can be confusing to navigate your way around Tokyo. Some of these smaller stations will not even have English on their signs. To help navigate the Tokyo area, two good sites to use are: • Hyperdia Timetable and Route Search: buff.ly/1eyICe8 • Jorudan Train Route Finder: buff.ly/1eyICeb On these websites, you are able to specificy your starting and end station, find the most direct and cheapest route, view last train times, etc. Foreigners may also be confused by the terminology used to describe the different types of trains. Some of these train categories include: • Local - 各駅 (kakueki) or 普通 (futsu) • Rapid - 快速 (kaisoku) • Express - 急行 (kyuukou) • Limited Express - 特急 (tokkyu) If the train you are getting on is not a local train, please be sure to check that the train will stop at your desired station using the train maps located around the train platform. > Buses Tokyo is also home to an extensive bus network. Please visit the website for the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation to view bus schedules and timetables: buff.ly/1eyIEmj More fun at Gaijin Guardian at gaijinguardian
