Getting What We Deserve Posted on June 30, 2013 by billmcmurdo The battle for the job of CEO in the newly-formed SPFL set-up highlights the need for strong leadership in the Scottish game at this moment in time. There are many who feel the contest is a false one, with Neil Doncaster being a virtual shoo-in to the position. If Doncaster does get the nod, Scottish football will indeed have its strong leader – only it won’t be him. Scottish football’s real leader is a few miles to the north-east of Hampden. Should David Longmuir just happen to get the job he will have to break the hegemony of this man. Whether or not he has the guts to take on the Blofeld of Scottish football we will have to wait and see – depending, of course, on him getting the job. With a tamed Rangers now in tow and safely under the cabal thumb, Peter Lawwell may feel he is in an invincible position. However, as avid fans of James Bond can testify only too well, Blofeld’s dastardly plans for world domination always get scuppered in the end by 007. There’s no doubt that the game in Scotland needs strong leadership from both the Glasgow giants. There are many, however, who feel that at present this leadership is only being shown by one half of the Old Firm – and that it is not leadership but despotism and control freakery which is being demonstrated. According to Wikipedia, “Despotism is a form of government in which a single entity rules with absolute power.” Yes, that about sums it up. However, there is an old saying that, if true, is a sad indictment on our game: We get the leaders we deserve. Considering the narrow-minded, self-serving, hate-filled, conniving, snivelling, two-faced people that populate Scottish football, the Lawwell-Regan-Doncaster axis is exactly what we deserve.
