Ghana Stands with Nigeria! #BringBackOurGirls!!, screams the banner on the handball pitch on the campus of the University of Ghana. They are all holding candles. Its a vigil by Muslims but I see about six American exchange students in the mix. They are here to stand in solidarity with Ghana stand in solidarity with Nigeria. Between Islamic songs and recitals, the preacher condemns in unequivocal terms murderous Islamism, citing numerous verses in the Koran to back what he is saying. Then he zooms in on religious harmony and the fact that Christians are also people of the Book. To hear him describe Christianity, youd be excused if you mistook this Islamic cleric for an American pentecostal televangelist. So much solidarity with Nigeria in the air here. So much extension of love from these Muslims to their Christian kith in Nigeria. And you know that beneath the veneer of the unending sibling rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria lies one beautifully shared umbilical cord. This is a good way to end my 24-hour session of ash and sackcloth for a continent I very nearly gave up on yesterday. Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika!
