Ghanaians have demonstrated against economic hardships throughout history. Pre-independence and post independence Civil Society Organizations have all concentrated their attentions on liberating society from economic hardships. The question then is, have these demonstrations ever lessen the economic hardships of the people? Has it ever been the true panacea in the long run? Why do people still feel the hardships? We have observed that protests such as these should rather target something else. Its time to question the status quo and adopt honest thinking into our national challenges. As citizens,we have looked on far too long unconcerned when the natural resources of the land are being whisked away by foreigners through the aid of some unscrupulous indigenes. We must change our attitude and mindset because it is the genesis of economic liberation. Ghanas share in its oil and gold reserves for example, are woefully insignificant. Rather than declaring Thursday(24th July,2014) as a Black Thursday protest to mount pressure on government to pretend to be solving our economic challenges , we should begin to demonstrate against the heartless wholesale of our natural resources to foreign investors whilst we settle for peanuts royalties and taxis and our people languish in tattered poverty. Imagine our share in the oil reserve to be 50-50 or 70 for Ghana and 30 for the investor or in any of our strategic natural resources . Should we achieve this, there would be no room for these economic hardship protests because we would have enough resources to disburse in addressing existing and emerging challenges. However, Commanding just a majority share or a fair share in the exploitation of our resources wouldnt be enough without building indigenous capacity in the exploration and exploitation .Lets give room for intellectual pragmatic dialogue in addressing our challenges. Lawful demonstrations are constitutional and a means but not the means to an end
