Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said last month that New York signed linebacker Jameel McClain as an insurance policy in case Jon Beason went down to injury. That looked like a wise move after Beason suffered a sesamoid fracture in his right foot in June, but now McClain is battling an injury of his own. McClain was carted off the field Tuesday during training camp practice with his Giants teammates. Per NFL Medias Kimberly Jones, coach Tom Coughlin later said that the linebacker suffered a foot injury and is being evaluated. After Beason opened camp on the physically unable to perform list, losing McClain for any amount of time will be costly. Look for rookie Devon Kennard to work with the first-team alongside Spencer Paysinger, while fellow backers Mark Herzlich, Kendrick Adams and Jacquian Williams battle for time in Big Blues 4-3 scheme. While New Yorks rebuilt secondary is frisky, injuries have left the Giants dangerously thin at the second level of their defense. UPDATE: X-rays on McClains foot were negative, according to NFL Medias Kimberly Jones. If the linebacker experiences additional soreness on Wednesday, the team may follow up with an MRI. ESPNs Josina Anderson first reported the news.
