Gibson Electric Membership Corporation cautions members to beware of scams targeting utility customers. A couple of the cooperative’s business members have contacted Gibson EMC officials because they have received calls from scammers claiming to be employees of Gibson EMC. If someone telephones you claiming to be an employee or contractor of Gibson EMC and says you must provide them with payment or claims that your last payment failed to go through, please take the following steps: 1. Get the name of the person calling, get the phone number off your caller, ID and get as much other information as you can. 2. If you have any reason to believe the call could be a scam – for example, you bill has already been paid or the amount the caller says you owe does not match the amount that you actually owe – tell the caller that you are going to hang up and call Gibson EMC for verification. 3. Then, call your local member service center. 4. Finally, if you are the victim of a scam attempt, please notify law enforcement.
