Gifts the real gifts: I met Leonard Pitt when I was 19 he was 31. He was a movement and mask artist and teacher with a school called The Leonard Pitt School of Mime. He smoked a pipe, had a small stick he used in classes to tap body parts for adjustments, and he made zuhdung sounds when he needed to make us understand points of movement punctuation. I had never meet anyone like him. He gave me a job postering for his school. I would take my bike and ride all over Berkeley with my staple gun, and bag of posters. At that time I had no vision that I would open a theater with him called Life on the Water, at that time I saw Lenny as an artist, playboy, world traveler and lover of Paris all things Paris. He had an Uncle Arthur that was the definition of eccentric who taught me to put a 2 cent stamp on a letter upside down in the far left hand corner of an envelope and it would be delivered. I fell in love with Lennys mother and she would tell me to help Lenny fix up his kitchen. Leonard and I come from very different backgrounds and we have fought and fallen out of terms and recovered to regain a stronger friendship including a love of greasy spoon diners for breakfast. Lenny has been an inspiration because he never finished school but has been a perpetual passionate student of Parisian Architecture and the Irish Healer Greatrakes along with his brilliant understanding of gestures, mask work and the moving body. He is a published author. But now there is a Lenny that shines brighter than any other I have known and I am so blessed to know this person called Grandpa Lenny.
