Gig Review: The Wombats at The Magnet “I’m back in Liverpool and everything seems the same!” Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy’s vocals across the packed Magnet basement as he joyfully belted out The Wombats‘ biggest hit Let’s Dance To Joy Division. Somehow it sounded as fresh as when he sang it in the early days, before the Glastonbury sets and the TV appearances. He was indeed back in Liverpool and back onstage singing new material for the first time since 2011. The LIPA trio – Woolton-born Murph, Garston’s Dan Haggis on drums and Norwegian Tord Overland-Knudsen on bass – played their ‘secret’ fan show at the Magnet as a warm-up before their UK tour, which comes back to Liverpool with a much bigger 02 Academy show in April. The small space worked well. Yes, they’ve played to tens of thousands before, but in the small Magnet basement they brought a new freshness to their older songs, reminding the crowd just how good they can be in an intimate space.
