GiiGii DeCastro: This all sounds great but how do you plan on working towards some of the seemingly-less feasible options? (I.e. Drivers ed, senior activities, specialized high schools) My response: Drivers Ed courses taught in high school requires a joint effort between the NYS Education Department and the DMV. The NYS Education Department approves the high schools, while the DMV approves the actual course being taught in school. In order to have the drivers Ed class at Bronx Science, wed have to get a teacher with a valid secondary school teaching certificate (which every teacher must have since theyre teaching at a public school), a good driving record, and taken 12 hours of courses from a state approved college on: Basic Driver Education Teacher Prep Program, General Safety Course, and Trends and Problems in Driver Education. A teacher with these requirements is fit to teach a class. In order to acquire approval from the NYS Education Department, the school has to fill out and submit a Driver Education Course Approval Form, along with Donahues signature. The NYS Education Department will notify us whether we have been approved or not. Approval is needed every three years vis resubmission of the approval form. Countless school have made this a successful part of their curriculum, but Ill name the ones that we are familiar with: The Dalton School, Cathedral High School, Regis High School, UN International School, Xavier High School, Cardinal Spellman, Fieldston, Fordham Prep, Horace Mann Upper Academy, Riverdale Country, Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences, Archbishop Molloy, Thomas A. Edison Career and Tech, etc. Dont let the fact that most of these schools are private and independent; New York City public schools are doing it now. As for getting the vehicles, a public school may contract with a NYSDMV license commercial driving school for behind the wheel and in car observation hours. Classroom instruction will be taught by aforementioned teacher who meets the qualifications. In a nutshell, this is how I would go about implementing a drivers Ed program in Bronx Science. Following posts will address senior activities and specialized high schools.
