Gina Jacupke’s work has been featured in numerous U.S. and international exhibitions. Jacupke is currently the featured artist for the Music and the Kohl Mansion series. Jacupke has travelled extensively to remote areas of the world, studying traditional arts and culture, and this experience informs her work. Jacupke juxtaposes ancient and contemporary color, composition and design as a recurring theme in here work. This is notably expressed in her contribution to this group show with a sculptural installation titled, Set of Three Stelai and Urban Stele I and II. Composed of Tarpaper, steel, oil paint, spray paint, cinderblock and chain link fencing, Jacupke utilizes the ancient form of the stele to express profound cross-cultural and contemporary spiritual concerns. A monument for funerary or commemorative purposes, the stele has an important place both the Western tradition, with examples from classical antiquity, and in China and Mesoamerica where it developed independently. Artist Gina Jacupke’s contemporary stelai installation incorporates these forms and spiritual concerns with raw, urban materials. As a sculptural form to acknowledge the afterlife, Jacupke also pays homage to the Aristotelian concept of aether as the “fifth element”. These works were previously featured in the Goethe Institute’s Berlin and Beyond Film Festival, where Jacupke was the only American invited artist.
