Ginger is a plant (Zingiber Officinale) of tropical Southeast Asia which has yellowish – green flowers and also has a pungent aromatic rhizome. This rhizome has often dried and powdered that used as spice also called as ginger root. Today we are going to discuss that how ginger helps to treat cold. We all know that cold is an upper respiratory infection caused by many different viruses. These virus particles will penetrate into the mucous layer of the nose and throat to cause the infection as cold. How Ginger helps to treat Cold: •Ginger is a natural antiviral which helps to fight against the illness and bacteria that causes cold and its symptoms. •It helps to stimulate perspiration that cleanses the system and bring down the body temperature •It contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which help to boost up the immune system and prevent cold and its symptoms. •It acts as a cough suppressant. It also acts as an antihistamine and decongestant that helps to ease the cold and its symptoms. •It contains chemicals called sesquiterpenes which specifically used to target rhinoviruses (the most common family of cold viruses) •It is a natural pain and fever reducer and also a mild sedative which helps to treat the cold and makes you feel comfortable from cold and its symptoms. •It is very effective against human respiratory syncytical virus. How to use Ginger to treat Cold: You can use ginger in many ways or even simply you can eat the raw ginger to get rid of the cold problem. But here we are going to discuss about the most common methods that are used in treating the cold. Method – 1: (Ginger, Lemon and Honey Tea) 1.Take a tablespoon of ginger which is grated and put it into a teapot or medium bowl 2.Then add 1 cup of boiling water over it and then allow it to steep for about 3 minutes. 3.In the meanwhile, take a large mug and add 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice (Lemon juice helps to boost up the immune system and cures the cold. 4.Add a tablespoon of honey (Honey is an antibiotic that helps to clear the cold and soothes your throat) and strain the ginger tea into that mug 5.Stir it well to dissolve the honey in hot water 6.As per you taste you can add additional honey or lemon. 7.Drink this tea which helps to prevent the cold and its symptoms. 8.Taking this tea regularly will helps a lot in treating the cold and also lessen its symptoms. Method – 1 A: (Ginger Lemon Juice and Honey Recipe) 1.Take 3 inch piece of fresh ginger and chop it finely 2.Take a bowl or cup, to that add 1/2 cup of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 cups of boiling water 3.Stir it well and then cover it with plastic wrap for about 10 minutes 4.Finally strain the solution and drink this to get rid of the cold and its symptoms. To the above recipes, you can add variations to this recipe of ginger, lemon and honey tea that are listed below. Variation with Cinnamon: 1.Cinnamon acts as antiseptic that helps to kill off the virus causing cold in your body. It also soothe your sore throat and promotes sweating to clear the cold and its symptoms. 2.Add 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to ginger, lemon and honey tea. 3.Mix it well and drink this to prevent the cold. Variation with Garlic: 1.Garlic helps to provide boost up to the general immune system. It acts as antiviral that works against the cold bug to prevent it. 2.Take crushed or chopped cloves of garlic and add this to the mix just before covering it with water 3.Strain it after steeping for 20 minutes 4.Drink this to get quick relief from the cold as it is very effective in treating the cold. Variation with Cayenne: 1.Cayenne relieves pain of the sore throat and also thins the mucus to reduce the congestion. It also acts as all-around immune system booster. 2.Take a pinch of cayenne and add this to the mix before steeping. 3.You can use it either alone or in the combination of cinnamon. 4.Or you can add a couple drops of Tabasco or hot pepper sauce after steeping and just before drinking the mix. Try all these variation as per your taste and preference to get rid of the problem. Method – 2: (Ginger Ale) Ginger reduces inflammation and treats your stomach upsets and nausea while you’re suffering from the cold. Ginger ale is one of the great way to take ginger that settle your stomach or reduces stuffy sinuses or coughing. Ginger ale gives relief from the cold and its symptoms. Process: 1.Take a dry funnel and add a cup of sugar to the bottle by using this dry funnel 2.Take 1/4 teaspoon of fresh granular active baker’s yeast and add this to the bottle through funnel. 3.Then take a fresh ginger root and grate it to have 2 tablespoons of grated root and add this to a measuring cup. 4.Juice a whole lemon or grapefruit and pour it into that measuring cup. 5.Add all this to the bottle through funnel by adding plenty of water to it 6.Put the cap and shake the bottle as this helps for carbonation process. 7.Reopen the bottle and fill it with fresh, cool and clean water by leaving about an inch of head space. 8.Again shake it well and place it in a warm location for up to 24 – 48 hours. 9.Now test the bottle to see if carbonation is complete by squeezing it forcefully. 10.When once you found that the bottle is hard to squeeze then place it in the refrigerator and use it from next day onwards. 11.Or simply you can buy it in the market by reading the label as if it is made up of real ginger or not. 12.Then open the bottle and allow it to go flat and warn to room temperature. 13.Finally pour it in a glass and sip it as needed by you. 14.Follow this process regularly to get rid of the stomach upset and other problems that are faced by you whenever you suffer from the cold and its symptoms. Method – 3: (Ginger) 1.Hot water vapor that contains ginger tincture will reduces the swelling of the sinuses in case of colds. 2.Or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to your ginger tea to get rid of the cold 3.Or take a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and mix it with a teaspoon of ground ginger 4.Stir it well and sprinkle it in your socks and wear this socks 5.Then walk around as much as possible by you 6.This process helps to keep your feet warm and you will sweat out the toxins to get clear from the cold and its symptoms. Method – 4: (Ginger with Honey, Lemon) 1.Take a whole lemon, 8 oz of small canning jar, 1.5” square nob of ginger and honey 2.Cut the lemon into slices of quarters and pack it into a jar 3.Then grate the ginger and then add this to lemon in the jar 4.Mix it well and add honey full of jar while stirring it. 5.Allow it to stay for few hours and then take a lemon piece and have a teaspoon of the honey to get relieve from the cold and its symptoms. 6.After using keep the jar in the refrigerator for further usage. 7.But make sure that it should not be given to the children of below 1 year age. Method – 5: (Ginger) 1.Take 10 grams of ginger and cut it into small pieces or slices 2.Then boil these ginger pieces in a cup of water until it reaches boiling point. 3.Strain the tea and drink this twice a day 4.This process helps to prevent you from cold and its symptoms. Even children can drink this to get rid of the cold. 5.Also you can include ginger either in raw form or in cooked form or by drinking it in tea or tincture form in your diet to relieve from many health problems like cold, cough, fever, etc. 6.Follow this regularly to prevent the cold and its symptoms. Cold Ginger Chicken Sauce: Cold ginger chicken sauce helps to give relief from the cold and its symptoms. Let’s see the recipe of cold ginger chicken. Method: Ingredients: •Chicken – 3 ½ pounds •Sesame oil – 2 tablespoons •Peanut/ vegetable/ corn/ olive oil – 1/4 cup •Finely chopped ginger – 1/2 cup •Finely minced green onions – 1/2 cup •Salt – 1 teaspoon as per taste Process: 1.Take chicken and place it in a covered stock pot that filled with enough water to cover the chicken. 2.Bring it to a boil and simmer for about 25 minutes 3.When chicken become tender then turn off the heat and let the chicken stand in cooking liquid until it just warm (for another 25 minutes) 4.Wash the chicken under cold water, pat dry and then rub it lightly with sesame oil 5.Now cut the chicken into pieces and arrange them neatly on a platter 6.Refrigerate the chicken until it is cold 7.Take a saucepan and heat the oil (peanut/ vegetable/ corn/ olive oil) in it 8.Once the oil is hot then add ginger and green onions 9.Cook it for about 30 seconds and then add salt 10.Finally pour the hot sauce over cold chicken and then have it to get rid of the cold and its symptoms. Ginger Soup: Ginger soup helps to prevent cold and its symptoms. You can try any of the combinational soups with ginger as the main ingredient. Let’s have some of the recipes here. Method: Ingredients: •Unsalted butter – 3 tablespoons •Carrots – 1 ½ lbs (peeled and sliced thin) •White Onion – 2 cups (chopped) •Ginger – 1 tablespoon (minced) •Vegetable broth (or chicken stock) – 2 cups •Water – 2 cups •Orange – 3 strips •Chives – (chopped, parsley, dill or fennel for garnish) •Salt – as per taste Process: 1.Take a soup pot and place it over medium heat 2.Melt the butter and cook onions and carrots until they become soft for about 5 – 8 minutes 3.Sprinkle a teaspoon of salt over it and add stock, water, ginger and the strips of orange zest to it 4.Bring it to simmer, cover and cook until carrots become softer for about 20 minutes. 5.Remove the strips of orange zest and discard it 6.Pour the soup into blander bowl by adding salt as per taste. 7.Take out from the blender and garnish with chopped chives, parsley or fennel fronds 88.Have this soup when it is hot. Regular intake of this soup will help to clear the cold and its symptoms.
