Gippsland Girls Cricket Carnival/Camp FYI – photos courtesy of Di Day, Kerry May & Rob Moore. The recent girl’s carnival/camp was welcomed by (apart from an annoying 40 minutes of dampness in a few isolated areas on Sunday) perfect weather for cricket. This year saw almost 180 girls participate, a huge jump in numbers siunce the previous record of 120 in 2012. We had, not to mention officials and parents, around 60 girls from outside the region and a pleasing 130 plus from Gippsland alone. This also saw a 100% increase in the 13 & Under group. The 8 senior teams were treated to turf wickets which, hopefully, will add to their experience and development. A lot of “thank you’s” !!! Thanks from Ian Rossborough, myself, the Gippsland Cricket League and Cricket Victoria & Di Day (Female Youth Programme Officer). Thanks everyone for all your wonderfully positive comments since the conclusion of the carnival. Thanks to the coordinators of other teams - Claudia Fatone, Daniel Trevillian, Rob Moore and those people such as Duncan Harrison who attempted to find players. Apologies to those of you that I don’t have names for – but thanks!!! Thanks to all our casual staff with special mention to Allan Newton, whom I failed to mention at the presentation, who did a power of work along with Mark Smith - another great helper that I neglected to mention. Again thanks to our sponsors - Peter Anderson at APCO, Peter Kingsbury at the Gippsland Dental Group, Clare Cannon, Jason Membrey and Simon Clark at the Latrobe City Council (the silent partner), Sporting Legends, Michaels Golden Hen (Moe), the Dandenong Womens Cricket Club and last but not least Cricket Victoria. Without their support this carnival could not have taken place in its entirety. Thanks to the parents that pitched in Jane (from Wyndham Vale) , Di W, Louise W, Danni K, Dawn B to name a few and the parent support from the other regions. Thanks to our “senior” girls that have been part of this carnival for so many years and who continue to support the younger girls coming through. The importance of this should be highlighted as it is an important lesson for our younger group to keep in mind for future years when they may wish to follow in the footprints of those that have supported them. A special mention to Andrew Farlie who drove his girls over a 1410 km round trip from the far reaches of the Murray Mallee - what an effort! Finally thank you to the following: Yarragon FNC (Geoff Jolly), Yarragon CC (Paula & Lou Borsato), Moe CC (Mike Walshe & Trevor Blandford), Moe/Newborough Dodgers Baseball Club (David Bloomfield), Newborough CC (Bill Robinson, Robert Blunt, Rob Vesty & Shane Johnston), Yallourn North CC (& junior football club) {Peter Donnet, John Wirz & club people}, Latrobe CC (Anthony Bloomfield, Brad Aitken & Chris Wells) and the junior football club at Northern Reserve Morwell (via Steve Kilpatrick). Thanks to our bus drivers from Gippsland – Ian Rossborough, Di Wrigglesworth, Rod Pollock, Braydan Moscript, Louise Ward and Jane from Wyndham Vale who stepped in when needed and to those that assisted with transport from the other regions. Congratulations to the Eagles that finished on top of the Senior division with Sale/Maffra runners up and the winners in the Junior section, the LOLS (combined team from Lakes, Orbost and Lucknow PS) with the Warragul/Foster team and Sale/Maffra finishing equal second. Dandenong Women’s CC presented two special awards, the first , a scholarship of $500 to help with coaching and transport, went to Hayleigh Brennan from S/M CA and the second, a coaching voucher to the value of $100, went to Kelsey East from Lakes Entrance (NB. Only Gippsland-based players were eligible for these awards in line with Gippsland and Dandenong Women’s alliance) Anyone that was involved, players, parents or assistants are welcome to submit their thoughts on what to keep or what could be changed.
