Give Thanks Rick Laing As Paul closes the first letter to the Thessalonians, he makes this statement, “In everything, give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thess. 5:17 ). We Christians in the USA have much to be thankful for in every way. Pause for a moment and consider some statistics that are disturbing: ● Half the world (3 billion) live on less than $2 a day, per person. ● The Gross Domestic Product of the poorest 48 nations (1/4 of the world’s countries) is less than the wealth of the world’s three richest people combined! ● Nearly a billion children live in poverty (1 in every 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelters; 400 million have no access to safe water; 270 million have no health services; 10.6 million died in 2003 before age 5. 27,000 children died today (and every day). Before you put that double-meat burger to your lips, give thanks to God, and pray for the poor and the lost of this world. Jesus did say we will always have the poor (John 12:8 ), but surely He did not want us to ignore them. We need to give thanks and act with compassion.
