Given recent media reports of ACCCs findings of labels on food - TopicsExpress

Given recent media reports of ACCCs findings of labels on food products, misleading consumers as to the origins and regionality of products, it is apparent that there is still confusion about when a region name can and can not be used on a food product, at both a consumer and producer/manufacturer level. Yes, there are already some laws in place regarding this, and bodies such as the ACCC, monitoring usage, but wouldnt it be easier to have a simple to use, and understand, legal system about when and how region names can be used on food products? A proper geographical indications system would assist to ensure that only products with a connection to a geographical location, which can be a connection of varying degrees, can have an identified geographical indication attached to them. Such a system, which would be regulated by an appropriate body, would assist to ensure that a geographical indication is only used on a product that has a certain quality, characteristic or attribution tied back to a region; that meets a criteria and standard of regionality. A legal system with clear rules would assist producers and consumers alike. One system that everyone can understand and recognise as promoting food, origin, regionality and culture. Its been done for wine, and its about time that it is done properly and clearly for food.
