Giving priority to Putin over his regional allies and internationalizing the struggle made Assad fall short of winning the battle of Syria where he would have- deservingly- ascended the presidency in a real democratic competition with the exclusive votes of the Syrians alone who would have rushed to vote for him free from fear or intimidation or any kind of conditioning . Syria would have become a real democracy then, and the elections a real test for the president’s credibility and liability and not an exhibit where international forces are seen at play. There is no real democracy in what happened in Syria today , there is rather complacency and a consecration of a situation prior to the war like we witnessed in Egypt . We like to think that Syria deserves better than this arrangement and so does the president of Syria
