Global Communities Rwanda shares the story of Uwizeyimana Erica, in recognition of International Day of Older Persons. Erica (69), led a challenging life, but has never given up on her desire improve her welfare. Erica missed the opportunity to enroll into a savings scheme supported by Global Communities, but rather than give up she sought out members who were enrolled in the program. From them she learned about saving and investing in productive activities. She also sought help and set up a kitchen garden using modern modern farming techniques. She now plants cabbages and carrots that she is able to sale for income and feed her grandchildren. Through its USAID Higa Ubeho Program, Global Communities supports over 1812 Integrated Saving and Lending Groups across 23 districts. The members are trained on the importance of group savings, investment, farming techniques, nutrition, and childhood development.
