Gluten Intolerance and Fat loss. Ben Coomber is quoted as saying (1) ’70-80% of his clients are on a gluten free diet’ and that ‘we have found out that he/she does better without them. Alex Ferentinos has been quoted in mens health, ‘You’ll suffer less bloating and lethargy too’ (2) This could cause the general public to think that removing gluten from their own diet will benefit their fat loss and performance endeavours. I’d like to put to you that it isn’t as simple as that. In a review by Marcason et al (3) concluded that ‘despite numerous health claims and the exploding popularity of gluten-free products, there are no published data to support weight loss claim for a gluten-free diet’. Another note to maybe consider is that when removing gluten from your diet you are likely going to remove a lot of calorie dense, low nutritionally valuable foods which in turn could help put you into a caloric deficit and hey presto, weightloss. Another review by Gaesser et al (4) further concluded ‘there is no evidence to suggest that following a gluten-free diet has any significant benefits in the general population.’ The review also highlights the benefits of consuming grains as part of a well balanced diet in a healthy individual. We also see that individuals who self report non-celiac gluten sensitivity show no effects to consuming gluten (5). Essentially they were suffering from the placebo effect. People saying they should remove gluten and they will feel better. If you think you have issues with gluten based products I would strongly suggest visiting your doctor not a nutritionist, personal trainer or what ever the hell people call themselves these days. It would be ill advised to go gluten free if you are a healthy individual, as there are many reported benefits of consuming some gluten based products.
