God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. I have seen this attributed to Rudyard Kipling. I have also seen it mentioned as a Jewish saying. In any case, if I believed in God, I would say that God made fathers for the same reason -- and also step-fathers, step-mothers, mothers in-law, fathers-in-law, foster mothers, foster fathers, etc. Pretty much the whole parent-race was created for just one reason.
