God is the Truth and the Difference Between Life and Death In Hebrew, a word is often not just a word. As well as representing a particular phonetic sound, each letter of the Hebrew alephbet (Hebrew alphabet) has its own, symbolic and numerical meaning. This means that Hebrew words are often not just words; theyre also often acronyms and/or metaphoric equations. As an example, the Hebrew word for truth is Emeth (pronounce A-met). It is written: אמת. The word is interesting for a variety of reasons. Aleph (א), the first letter of the word, is always used in Hebrew to signify God. It also means first or beginning because it is the first letter of the alephbet. The second letter, Mem (מ), signifies water, which symbolizes life in the Bible. Mem (מ) also means middle because it is the 13th or middle letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The final letter, Tav (ת), means ending or final because it is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This means that in Hebrew, the truth covers everything - beginning, middle and end. The other concept Emeth shows us is the importance of God. As stated earlier, the character aleph (א) always represents God in Jewish thought. The other two characters, mem and tav together make up the word met (מת), which means only one thing: death. In other words if you remove God (Aleph) from the Hebrew word for truth (Emeth), all you have left is death (Met). In other words, what difference does God make? Nothing short of the difference between life and death. The equations can perhaps be written as follow: God was in the beginning, He is now, and he will be there in the end. God + water (life) = The Truth (Jesus said, “I am the way, The Truth, and the life”) And if we subtract God from Truth the equation reads: The Truth – God = Death
