Going Further & Growing Stronger MARRIAGE IS A GOOD THING In Matthew 19:4-6 (NCV), Jesus said: “Surely you have read in the Scriptures: When God made the world, ‘He made them male and female.’ And God said, ‘So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one body.’ So there are not two, but one. God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them.” Marriage was God’s idea. There’s a lot of talk in our culture today about marriage being “only a piece of paper” or a “man-made institution” but that’s not what Jesus said. God created the institution of marriage, which means… Marriage is sacred. It’s not something that can be defined by man, politicians or governments. Marriage is defined by God – a husband is to love and cherish his wife, and a wife is to honor and support her husband. It also means marriage was designed to be good. Remember when God created the world? After creating man and woman and instituting marriage, God said, “It is good” (Genesis 1:31). Do you know what that means? It means that marriage wasn’t designed to be bad. It wasn’t designed to be hurtful or constricting. It was (and is!) a good thing…when done God’s way. Husbands…if you don’t treat your marriage the way God intended, it won’t be a good thing. You can’t not love and cherish your wife and still expect to have a strong marriage. Wives, you can’t not honor and support your husbands and still expect to have a fulfilling marriage. Sometimes we get this backwards. We look at our spouse and think, “If he would love me, I would honor him,” or, “If she would support me, I would cherish her.” But that’s not what marriage is all about. Marriage is about going first. Be the first person to encourage, instead of waiting to be encouraged. Be the first person to forgive, instead of waiting for an apology.
