Going puffin hunting! JUST KIDDING! I am headed to the Aleutian Islands as a volunteer with a USGS group of seabird researchers led by John Piatt. We are using puffin diets and chick condition as ecosystem indicators. Pretty awesome stuff! I will spend two weeks on the R/V Tiglax. Each day we will go to shore, hike up to puffin burrows, screen nests to intercept meals as parents return to feed the chicks, and grub chicks (take wing measurements and weights). Then we will go back to the ship and spend the rest of the night identifying prey species, most of which are forage fish like Pacific sand lance and capelin.
