Going to court was very scary and intimidating. I feel fortunate - TopicsExpress

Going to court was very scary and intimidating. I feel fortunate to not be on the other side of that. I felt lots of sympathy for the people being sentenced, even though I suppose they made choices to end up there. But did they really always have choices? Im not so sure about that. 100% of the people I saw sentenced were minorities or disadvantaged peoples, where as 100% of the people involved in the sentencing were not (as far as I could tell). Seems rather too much to be coincidental. I was never really sure what to look at since no one likes being pitied, but ignoring seems kind of heartless and bourgeoisie (even saying bourgeoisie probably makes me bourgeoisie so maybe its hopeless). Lots of awkwardly staring any my hands. A lady who stole (and returned) a truck so she could help her homeless friends move their belongings before they were confiscated said she liked my hair. I said her hair (buzzcut) was much more practical and used less conditioner. Conditioner probably wasnt her biggest concern. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and to pay $2000. She asked if she could have 2 hours before reporting to jail so she could pick up some shoes from the post office before they were sent back. Hers had holes in them and she was worried about the wet getting in during the winter. Not sure where the $2000 is going to come from since clearly she is an extravagant spender blowing all her cash on shoes. Everyone made a point to say thank you for being so nice. Which makes me think, what are other people like? I dont think Im that unusually nice. Meth lady had a cute cat sweater. Im glad her mom came with her because her lawyer didnt show up until nearly an hour after we were scheduled to start (which I gathered is not unusual). I cant imagine just sitting there waiting to be sentenced all by yourself. I wanted to talk to her, but it was not allowed. Hey I like your sweater. I like cats too! Did my cats keep you company while you were under the bed? Sorry I sat on you. She was sentenced to something very complicated that I didnt totally understand. 100 days of jail x 2, but she can go to in-patient treatment instead and then back to jail if she doesnt show up for it. Plus she has to pay $422.41 remuneration for bunny lamp and screen window replacement. I didnt ask for money for the bed since thats expensive and it was old. I think I have a lot more money than meth lady. Little did I know reasonable remuneration is $2000 per hour for driving a car. I could have charged big dollars for under the bed hotel time. Except there are no treatment beds available for her (for reasons that are super BS), so she instead goes to holding pattern jail where she stares at the wall for 8 hours then goes home. I dont feel like drug addiction is something you can just put on pause for 3 months while you are waiting for for treatment space to free up. I also doubt fake jail is much cheaper than treatment. In summery, going to court is very depressing no matter which end of it you are on. Criminals are just regular people with moms an cat sweaters. Jail is a terrible option for people with mental health and drug related issues.
