Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram Leela: Cinema meets literature (and Chetan Bhagat is nowhere on the list)! And now that it does, can Shakespeare be neglected? Romeo & Juliet goes Indian on the big screen for the fourth time now (following Manish Tiwarys Issaq, Habib Faisals Ishaqzaade, and the cult, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, by Mansoor Khan), thus making the play the one with probably the highest number of movie-adaptations. Directed flawlessly, the movie stands vivified in comparison to its previous counterparts. Its like a dish made by different cooks; each tasting different, though with exactly same ingredients. Ram Leela has everything an SLB-directed movie has: melodrama, excellent choreography, remote backdrops, striking psychedelia on a darker background and, most importantly, his guarantee of a good performance by the cast. He has kept it all consistent. Ranveer marks himself sound and sane. His forte in acting is so conspicuous, here, after his debut, Band Baaja Baarat, and his penultimate, critically acclaimed Lootera, which too was an adaptation. His transformation from vagabond-to-hardcore-romance goes so subtle, that by the time the movie ends, youd wonder how it all happened! Deepika retains her boldness consistently, and proves to be the perfect choice to portray Leela. The other cast, which includes Richa Chaddha, Gulshan Devaiah, Barkha Bisht, have definitely been bolts on the hinges. Its an SLB movie after all! However, it was Dhankor Baa (played by Supriya Pathak), the Head of the Saneda tribe, who actually stole the show with her astounding performance! Sure does she have an award reserved! From perversion to romance, mere bullets-shot-to-flaunt to bloody savages, ages-old rivalry to budding relations, the director paves a flawless road to travel on - this Ram Leela. Not a must watch, but definitely a thumbs-up for a good rendition. 4/5: 2 for Ram, Leela, and Baa, and the other 2 for everything else! :)
