Gonna be bold and change the subject. New years Eve 1979 at Coldwater Country In Lubbock Joe’s New Years Eve gig went without a flaw as usual. The only small speed bump occurred bacstage when a drunken fan shoved a friend’s wife aside so he could say hello to Joe to Joe. This was unacceptable. I sent two quick left jabs to his nose the followed by a right hook bringing Coldwater bouncers. “Hey, what the hell is going on? One burly bouncer asked. “He shoved a woman out of the way so I stepped up and took him down.” Bo was there and saw it all come down. “Damn Sam I didn’t know you were so quick.” Bo laughed. The chivalrous Lubbock guy in me had stepped in and took care of business. After the gig I jumped into a car with Leola, Rhonda, Geraldine, Sharon and Naomi. We were going to a speakeasy in East Lubbock where Joe hung out after shows. Joe’s music blared on the tape player as we all joined in at the top of our lungs. We all knew the songs by heart. I call the place a speakeasy but it was just an Eastside house with a pool table and juke box in the living room. We joined a dozen black folks. The kitchen featured pork chop sandwiches between two slices of white bread. I would encounter several such places when I later toured with Joes band.
