Gonzalo is still a hurricane right as it races over the cold waters of the north Atlantic Ocean. Its centered as of 11 a.m. EDT/AST about 265 miles east-northeast of St. Johns, Newfoundland, moving toward the northeast at 55 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 85 mph - a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Gonzalo is expected to become extratropical later today and weaken during the next 48 hours. However, its forecast to maintain storm-force winds over the north Atlantic until the it dissipates by 72 hours. The Canadian Hurricane Centre has discontinued the Tropical Storm Watch for the Avalon peninsula of southeast Newfoundland.
