Good Morning, Andrew Page here from the Local Newsroom: One of the academics behind the viral article, that tells their tale of encountering Cannibal Brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park has defended his claims. Dr Don Driscoll, a Researcher at the Fenner School of Environment and Ecologist with the Australian National University who also has a PhD says the events they encountered were real. But hes not concerned with what people think. “I think thats fine for people to deny what we saw, that doesnt really matter to us that much, what does matter though, is that from our calculations, it looks as though if you dont aerial cull horses in Kosciuszko National Park an extra 4000 to 5000 horses are going to die unseemly deaths either by being sent to the abattoir, or dying by starvation, thirst or poisoning on the mountain,” Dr Driscoll said. However, they were unable to produce any further evidence to back their observations in the park. Meanwhile, Dr Mike Mesley, a veterinary scientist and director of Snowy Mountains Veterinary Group is not entirely convinced. “Certainly we hear of herbivores eating bone, probably because we presume because of the mineral content, by which I mean its got to be pretty fossilized or broken down bone, but certainly not of eating meat as such,” Dr Mesley said.
