Good Morning Campers! I see some of you were up late .. lol so Ill type quietly. The bees are buzzing around checking out anything that remotely looks like a flower at the moment. Do any of you have bees? native or European in your patch? When you look at the picture of these hives on my farm - you are probably wondering why the orange plastic crate is there? It contains rocks and crusher dust - it supplies the bees with water it is close to their hives - and minimise the risk of drowning. The bees suck or draw the water they need through the sand, rocks or crusher dust. If I put out a bowl of water some would drown - they need an edge to drink from. The bees mainly use water to maintain a stable temperature and humidity level in the hive. You can often see the air conditioning crew at the entrance to the hive either drawing hot air out or blowing cooler moist air into the hive. I can walk up to the hives and have them zig zagging all around me - they know I mean them no harm and often wait for me to pour clean tank water into the crate for them. I usually wear a hi visibility long sleeve shirt and long trousers- they dont seem to like black or red clothing - or high pitched.whipper snippers. :)
