Good Morning, Murika....up for some Patriotic Pablum to start your day?? For some reason, Kate Smith comes to mind this morning, so here ya go... Kate WHO?? Well, you neophytes, Kate Smith was a mountain of a woman with an air raid siren of a voice.... Imagine Honey Boo Boo, all grown up and with an incredible talent....she had the brass of Ethel Merman--but with a classical vibrato--and the sweetness of Doris Day, all rolled into one large package... And I know you are saying Ethel Who? and Doris Who? as well....sigh.... Anyway, heres the ultimate Jingoistic Jingle...God Bless America, written by Irving Berlin in 1918 to rouse the rabble for our entry into WWI, and resurrected by the spin doctors to get us ready for WWII...I love the vignettes in this clip, including the one with the Great Impersonator himself, a young Ronald Reagan in the last scene.... But more than anything, I love this voice. Note the distance of the mike from her mouth....she could break glass on the top floor of the Empire State Building while standing at street level....I heard her sing this live, in The Polo Grounds, in 1953...and even without a mike you could hear her in the cheap seats.... God Bless America, and God Bless Kate Smith...
